About the school

Druhý stupeň základní škola Duhovka Praha

THE SECOND STAGE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In the past years we have seen growing interest in Duhovka Elementary from parents, and the number of children experiencing the benefits of our Czech-English Montessori educational program has constantly been growing.

In September 2019, Duhovka Elementary has opened Grade 6 thus enabling children to spend another (at least) 4 years with Duhovka. This year it also presents an opportunity for children from other schools - they are welcome to join us! The number of Grade 6 vacancies will be almost certainly greater than could be taken by our children in this year’s Grade 5 at Duhovka. In the following years we will be gradually opening Grades 7-9.

We will be delighted to welcome children to our school who would prefer this form of education. If they had a Montessori experience already during the first stage of elementary education, the better. If they experienced alternative education based on similar philosophy, this will be a great continuation of their education for them among us. If they attended traditional school and were seeking admission to an eight-year grammar school, to which they couldn’t be admitted due to the fact that applications for admission exceed the admission number, Duhovka might be the next appropriate step even for them. Especially if they and their parents felt that there "had been something missing" in the traditional education system. However, the condition for admission will, among other things, be a more advanced level of their English, which is the second language of communication at Duhovka, because this is the only way as to how benefit from the presence of native English speaking teachers.

Also in the second stage of elementary school the Montessori method will be consistently applied - the instruction will thus be based on interdisciplinary studies, contextual learning, emphasis on social skills, individual approach, practical experiences and the prepared environment. We believe that the class containing Grades 6-9 will provide our children with meaningful and effective education that in addition to positive experience will also form a perfect basis for further educational path.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our director Jindřich Kitzberger at 220 303 821 or jindrich.kitzberger@duhovkaskola.cz.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS

The date of the admission procedure will be announced during April 2020, the invitation sent on the basis of a preliminary application.

You can download the application HERE, you can edit the downloaded application on the computer.

The following criteria shall be applied in the admissions process:

a) Assessment of the child during a one-day test stay - the assessment will include academic (Czech, English, mathematics tests) as well as social skills of the child necessary for the study in the Montessori bilingual school.  When assessing the knowledge of the Czech language, the child’s long-term stay abroad, if any, and their different mother tongue shall be taken into account.

b) A previous attendance of a Montessori school

c) Bilingual children who speak Czech and English at the native speaker level or at least at such a level enabling them to communicate fluently and spontaneously with native speakers without much effort on both sides.

d)  Siblings of children attending any Duhovka school.

e)  An individual meeting with the parents of the child, usually attended by the school director and one of the school founders. The aim of this interview is to clarify whether the educational offer of the school is identical to parents' expectations, i.e. that the parent accepts and is interested in what our school offers. The meeting will take place before the enrolment date. (The precondition for the admission of the child is merely the fact that the meeting is held, its course and results will have no effect on admission.)

LOCATIONS

The Duhovka Elementary school building houses Grades 1-6 in mixed-age classes. The first three-grade classes containing Grades 1-3 are followed by classes containing Grades 4-6. With the opening of the second stage of elementary school in September 2019, even this three-grade class now consists of all the relevant grades. We can place another new class consisting of Grades 7-9 into the Nad Kajetánkou building, too. This will not only make full use of the building but it will also be fully in line with the Montessori approach. Children who are not prepared for grammar school education after Grade 5 will have the opportunity to continue their education at Duhovka Elementary until the completion of elementary education.

The Duhovka Elementary school building houses Grades 1-5 in mixed-age classes. The first three-grade classes containing Grades 1-3 are followed by classes containing Grades 4-5. With the opening of the second stage of elementary school in September 2019, this three-grade class will contain all the relevant grades. We can place another new class into the Nad Kajetánkou building, and thus also Grade 6. This will not only make full use of the building but it will also be fully in line with the Montessori approach. The existing classes containing Grades 4-5 will thus be gradually complemented with sixth graders and we will achieve the full benefits of a mixed-age class.   Children who are not prepared for grammar school education after Grade 5 will have the opportunity to continue their education at Duhovka Elementary.
